Swadeshabhimani Award for ‘Madhyamam’ Kochi bureau chief CAM Kareem

Kochi: CAM Kareem, Kochi bureau chief of ‘Madhyamam’ daily, has been selected for the journalist award instituted by the Swadeshabhimani Memorial Committee. His series of articles on the role of bribery in the unending pollution in Kochi city won him the award worth Rs 10,000, certificate and memento.

Mr Kareem has won several awards in the past also like the Drishti Award, Dubai NRI Welfare Committee Award, CH Award and the Kairali TV- Navab Rajendran Award. Kareem hails from the Kottayam district in southern Kerala.

The award has been instituted in the name of the newspaper ‘Swadeshabhimani’ in Kerala that supported the freedom struggle. The newspaper ‘Swadeshabhimani’ was owned by Vakkom Abdul Qader Moulvi. Ramakrishna Pilla, who later came to be known as ‘Swadeshabhimani’, was its editor. The newspaper got into the hit listof the British and was sealed. The owner and the editor were arrested and exiled too.
