New Delhi: The Congress Thursday denied it had issued instructions to its leaders and party workers not to take part in meetings where Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan is present.

“There are no instructions from the high command,” Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed.

Ahmed said party workers were taking their own call on going for a function attended by Bachchan. “They are going or not going according to their own wish,” he said.

Asked about the party’s critical remarks against the actor, Ahmed said some of its workers were upset over Bachchan’s acceptance of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s offer to be brand ambassador of the state.

“Modi has the worst reputation among the chief ministers of the country as he is facing accusations in connection with 2002 riots,” Ahmed said.

Bachchan was embroiled in a controversy when he attended the inauguration of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link’s extension last week.

The Bollywood star posted scanned copies of the official invite he received for the event on his blog, after Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan denied that he had invited the superstar. Bachchan said he was invited by a minister.
