Carry proper documents, Indians workers in Malaysia told

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Indian government Monday cautioned Indian workers going to Malaysia to check if they have the right documentation and acquaint themselves with employment guidelines, rather than depending completely on “unscrupulous” recruiting agents.

“It has come to the notice of the government that a large number of workers misguided by some unscrupulous Indian as well as Malaysian Recruiting Agents (RAs) are emigrating to Malaysia without proper documentation about their employment, foreign employer and employment contract etc,” said a press release issued by the ministry of overseas Indian affairs.

Due to wrong information, the workers not only become vulnerable to “exploitation” by employers, but “often get stranded in Malaysia without work and then lodge complaints in the Indian High Commission at Kuala Lumpur”, it noted.

The Indian High Commission has formulated guidelines for Indian workers taking up legal employment, and urged them to get familiarized with the legal framework and working conditions in Malaysia.

These guidelines are also available on the website of the Malaysian ministry of human resources (www.mohr.gov.my).

Among the guidelines are basic advice like obtaining a resident permit or identity card and a labour card immediately on arrival in Malaysia. Similarly, Indian workers were warned not to sign another employment contract or a blank document during their stay in the Southeast Asian nation.
