UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit Gulf

New York: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay will begin a ten-day visit to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries Saturday to discuss cooperation with governments and civil society organisations in the region.

According to a statement issued Friday, she will start her tour from Saudi Arabia, and then visit Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain before visiting the United Arab Emirates, and concluding the tour in Oman.

The visit is the first time that a UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has visited all GCC states during the same mission.

The commissioner is expected to meet leaders, senior ministers, government officials and members of civil society in GCC countries.
