The Muslim political party ignored contenders from its own ranks to field Jafri who is not a member of the party.

The 55-year-old journalist’s election as council member is certain as ruling Congress party has left one seat for its ally MIM while contesting two other seats.

Elections to three seats of the council from local authorities’ constituencies will be held May 7. Two seats in Hyderabad and one in Ranga Reddy are going to polls.

Jafri will be the second MIM legislator after Altaf Hussain Razvi in the 90-member council.

The journalist worked as editorial advisor to Etemaad, a Urdu daily published by MIM, for three years before joining as associate director of an advertising agency in 2008.

During his journalistic career spanning 39 years, Jafri was associated with English dailies Newstime, Deccan Chronicle, Rediff, BBC, Reuters and other media organisations.
