The banner on top of the China Daily website read “Sharing Sorrow, Moving Forward”, while that of the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of China, People’s Daily, read “China mourns for Qinghai quake victims”.

The 7.1-magnitude quake that struck Yushu in Qinghai province last Wednesday left 2,064 people dead. At least 175 people were still missing Tuesday. The quake also left 12,135 people injured.

The websites also featured black-and-white photographs of people lighting candles in memory of the victims.

Earlier Wednesday, top Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao, paid tributes in the capital to victims of the quake, while thousands of people gathered at the quake site to pay their last respects to the deceased.

Even the rescuers, still working all-out to search for the missing people, stopped for three minutes to mourn.
