Literacy should be the first priority of the community: Prof. Azis

Lucknow: Advocating a need for waging a battle against illetracy, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice-chancellor Prof PK Abdul Azis said on Saturday that with facilities like Right to Education (RTE) in hand, muslims across the country should not miss any opportunity to be at par with other communities.

Prof Azis was delivering the inaugural speech at the two day national conference on minority education that began on Saturday here at Integral University. The conference is being organized jointly by Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh and Integral University, Lucknow.

“For last 63 years we have been provided with immense opportunities. The fault for our worrisome conditions lies within us as we missed the bus everytime we had a chance,” added Prof Azis.

For improving the current state of affairs of ediucation among muslims in UP, added Prof Azis, Muslims needed a new generation of leaders committed to serve the community and serve the nation. He also said that literacy should be the first priority in all the endeavours undertaken.

“Every mother should sent her child to school at the basic level. Retaining a child in school till higher classes is a challenge,” added the voce-chancellor.

Calling upon the muslim minority to work for cadre building, Speaker, Vidhan Sabha Sukhdev Rajbhar said that there should be an understanding between the audience and the address. He called upon the minorities to learn lessons from the fellow country men who had a better share in all spheres of life. UP minority commission Chairman SMA Kazmi said that Muslims should give up the habit of asking for concessions and instead start working for optimum utilization of resources available. He said that it was better to stop regretting about the facilities.

“We have cried enough for last six decades. Now it is high time that muslims should present themselves as an asset to the country and not a liability,” he added.

Earlier welcoming the guests, vice-chancellor Integral University Prof SW Akhtar presented the statitistics of minority education in India . He called upon the participants to discuss this serious issue and create awareness among muslim masses about the resources available to them
