Thiruvananthapuram : Veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Varkala Radhakrishnan died Monday morning, a party official said. He was 82.
Radhakrishnan was hospitalised here last week. His condition worsened Sunday night and he was shifted to the ICU of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College where he died Monday morning.
“His funeral will take place around 9.30 p.m. today (Monday),” the party official said.
Radhakrishnan began his career in 1952 as a village council head of Varkala in the suburbs of Thiruvananthapuram. He was a member of the Kerala Assembly from 1980 to 1996. Between 1987 and 1991, he was the assembly speaker.
Since 1998, he represented the Chiryankeezhu Lok Sabha constituency in Thiruvananthapuram district and was popularly known as “annan”.
Radhakrishnan is survived by three children.
