No decision on assembly seat Soren will contest

Ranchi: A crucial meeting of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s (JMM) legislature party Sunday failed to decide on the constituency from which Chief Minister Shibu Soren will contest to enter the assembly. The decision will now be taken by the party’s national executive Monday.

Soren, currently a Lok Sabha member from Dumka, took over as the chief minister Dec 30, 2009. He has to become a member of the state assembly before June 30 as per the constitutional obligations.

“The JMM national executive meeting will take place Monday and it will decide the seat from which Soren will fight the assembly poll. Today’s (Sunday) meeting decided that Soren will not fight from Torpa assembly seat,” a JMM leader told IANS.

Former Maoist leader and JMM legislator Polush Surin, who represents Torpa, had resigned, in a move to facilitate Soren’s entery into the assembly by contesting the by-poll. “The party leaders were against the move of Soren fighting from Torpa. We won the Torpa seat but it has never been a JMM stronghold. Torpa may repeat the Tamar assembly poll,” the JMM leader said.

Soren, in January last year, had lost Tamar assembly by-poll and he had to quit as chief minister.
