Panaji : The statement of Fiona Mackeown, mother of slain British teenager Scarlett Keeling, in a trial court pointing towards Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik’s involvement in the state’s drug mafia rocked the legislative assembly Tuesday.
Assembly proceedings were disrupted after Speaker Pratapsing Rane turned down opposition demands for a discussion on Mackeown’s statement made in a trial court Monday.
Mackeown’s 15-year-old daughter was allegedly drugged, sexually assaulted and left to die at Anjuna beach, 20 km from here, more than two years ago.
She told the court that Naik headed the drug mafia in Goa and his son Roy had given Scarlett drugs.
“It is a very serious issue. The home minister has been accused of heading the drug mafia in court. We want a discussion on this issue,” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator and leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar said.
Rane rejected Parrikar’s demand claiming that the house could not take up the issue, because it was pending before a court.
After the demand was rejected by the speaker, BJP members stormed the well of the house shouting slogans against the government.
Tuesday’s disruption over the police-politician-drug mafia nexus issue was the sixth in the ongoing monsoon session.
On five earlier occasions, the opposition disrupted proceedings claiming that the government was shielding those involved in the drug trade. The opposition demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the issue.
