New Delhi : Third bid to pick a new prime minister for Nepal ended indecisively Monday after both candidates vying for post failed to secure the required majority.
A candidate needs to secure 300 votes, a simple majority of the 599-member Constituent Assembly (CA), as per the Interim Constitution 2063.
The result of the third round of prime ministerial election depicts the bleak picture for the politics of majority.
Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal garnered 259 votes in his favour, 114 votes were against, and 208 lawmakers remained neutral. In the last runoff, Dahal had secured 241 votes, the ekantiput.com reported.
While Nepali Congress (NC) Parliamentary Party leader and prime ministerial candidate Ram Chandra Poudel secured 124 votes, 246 votes were cast against him, and 186 lawmakers abstained from voting when the proposal to elect him as the new prime minister was tabled. He had secured 113 votes in the last election.
Altogether 581 lawmakers participated during the voting of Dahal, whilst 556 lawmakers took part in the voting of Poudel.
