New Delhi : With the health infrastructure for the Commonwealth Games almost ready, the focus is now on ridding hotels and guest houses where delegates will stay during the Oct 3-14 mega-event of rats, lizards and other pests.
A government official said the Delhi government has asked the Pest Control India Limited to take responsibility for this as the newly-constructed rooms have a large number of rats and lizards.
“It would be embarrassing if we can’t check rodents,” the official said.
Also, with much of Delhi dug up for construction purpose and rains adding to the rise in dengue cases in the capital, attention is also being paid to fogging in all the stadia.
Even though it is not the peak season, the city has witnessed over 100 dengue cases so far.
The official said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has been given the responsibility of launching aggressive fogging in all the stadia during the games regularly to keep a check on mosquito breeding.
In its health preparations for the mega-event, the government has designated three hospitals – Govind Ballabh Pant, Ram Manohar Lohia and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) – for providing medical care to athletes and technical delegates, among others.
Medical centres have also been set up at every stadium and training venue.
Besides, officers, doctors and paramedics have been trained and earmarked for extending the best medical services to the delegates.
The Delhi cabinet recently decided to purchase 31 air-conditioned ambulances, equipped with life-saving appliances, to meet any eventuality during the Games.
