New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Friday stressed the need for harnessing renewable energy, saying it will sensitise citizens towards their duty to make the city cleaner and a better place to live in.
Speaking at the ‘Akshay Urja Diwas’ celebration here to mark the 66th birth anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, she said the only possible renewable energy options in the city are solar and waste-to-energy projects.
Dikshit also inaugurated a waste-to-bio-fuel pilot plant at Delhi Secretariat as part of an initiative of the Department of Environment.
The chief minister pointed out that the plant will result in a saving of Rs.7 lakh per annum as natural gas generated from the plant will be used for cooking in the Delhi Secretariat canteen.
All kitchen and horticulture waste to a capacity of 500 kg per day can be fed into the plant to produce 40 cubic meters of gas per day equivalent to two commercial and three domestic LPG cylinders.
