Chennai: Prof. M.H. Jawahirullah, President, Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, has demanded 3% reservation for Muslims in Puducherry while terming as meager the 2% reservation for the community announced recently by the state government.
Puducherry Chief Minister Mr. Vaidiyalingam has announced that his government will give Muslims 2 percent quota from within the quota for the Backward classes.
Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam has been organizing various struggles demanding exclusive reservation for Muslims of the state. The TMMK had also announced that it would gherao the Pondy CM when he visits Tamilnadu. After protracted delay the Puducherry CM has announced that his government would earmark 2 percent reservation for Muslims from the quota allotted for Backward classes.
“TMMK feels that this 2 percent quota is very meagre for Pondicherry Muslims when compared to their population,” said Prof Jawahirullah. A few months back the state cabinet decided that it would earmark 2.5 percent for Muslims.
“TMMK demands that the Puducherry CM should amend his announcement and issue orders for atleast 3 percent reservation for Muslims which should come into effect immediately.
