Thiruvananthapuram : The Students Islamic Organisation marked its presence by winning several seats in the Kerala University Students Union elections. SIO candidates have been selected to the Students Council and Executive Committee of the University. State President of the organization PM Salih congratulated the winners and said that the election victory was the success of SIO’s motto for a creative campus.
Anas, student at the Government B.Ed College, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kollam district committee member of the SIO, was elected to the Students Council. Arshad, student at the National College, made it to the Executive Committee. Ahmed Yasir, doing MA at the Kerala University’s Karyavattom campus and Thiruvananthapuram district secretary of the SIO, managed to gain a good number of votes but couldn’t make it to the University Senate.
The achievement in the Kerala University elections is the real indicators of the fact that the student community has begun to recognize the significance of the SIO’s politics in campuses, said state president PM Salih. SIO activists took out a rally in the capital city to celebrate the victory which came their way by fighting the strong SFI. The students’ gathering at the Rakthasakshi Mandapam was inaugurated by state Secretary Muhammed Aslam. Jamat e Islami Kerala Amir T Arifali, the organisation’s political secretary Hameed Vanimel and Solidarity Youth Movement state vice-president KA Shafeeq appreciated the victory of SIO.
The University elections held in July end were, as usual, swept by the SFI which bagged 23 out of the 27 seats. SFI bagged 12 out of the 15 members in the Executive Committee. The other seats were won by KSU and AISF, besides SIO. The SFI generally wins the college elections and the SIO, as in earlier elections, focused on fighting the ‘secular fascism’ of the SFI which does not allow other organizations to function properly in the campuses. SIO activists have several times been attacked by the SFI, the recent one being the attack on the Campus Caravan of the SIO in which many including the state president PM Salih were injured. The victory of SIO is seen as a welcome note to the organisation’s state conference which would be held in December.
