Manjeri: PDP Chairman Abdunnasir Maudany should be immediately released from the Bengaluru prison, demanded the All India Milli Council in its 14th national general convention held in Kerala. The demand was made in the resolution passed in the convention which was held at Manjeri in Malappuram on December 11 and 12, on the slogan ‘Destroy hatred, Build the nation’. The new office-bearers of the Council were also elected at the convention.

The resolution reportedly said that Maudany was imprisoned by implicating him wrongly in the Bengaluru bomb blast. The Karnataka government is hunting Muslims in the name of blasts in order to protect the anti-minority moves of the RSS and the Sri Ram Sene as well as to cover up the inability of the government which is drowning in scams. All organizations, human rights activists and leaders should put pressure on the Karnataka government for the release of Maudany, it added.

The convention asked the central government to implement the recommendations of the Ranganath Misra and Js Rajinder Sachar Commissions to remove the backwardness of the minorities. Those politicians who do not aim at the betterment of minorities including Muslims should be recognized and given apt response in elections. The government should take initiatives to ensure equal justice and protection for Muslims, the resolutions said. The Council also decided to form a youth wing to involve the youth in the national issues.

Indian Muslims should follow the example of the Prophet who conquered even strong enemies with love and modesty, said Moulana Abdulla Mugheshi, Milli Council national president, while inaugurating the concluding public conference on Dec 12. The country attained freedom when people fought side by side without considering religion and faith; and the new failure is that the hard-earned freedom reached the hands of some other powers, said Moulana Dr Yaseen Usmani, national vice-president. Dr Muhammed Mansoor Alam (national general secretary), EM Abdul Rahman (PFI chairman and Milli Council executive member), Moulana Abdul Wahab Qilji (assistant general secretary), Prof Muhammed Sulaiman (INL national president and Milli Council executive member), E Aboobaker (SDPI national president) and Dr Saeed Marakkar (Milli Council state president) spoke. Adv KM Ashraf (Milli Council Kerala secretary) gave the welcome note and K Muneer delivered the vote of thanks.

The office-bearers of the Council for the coming three years were elected at the convention. Moulana Abdulla Mugheshi and Dr Muhammed Mansoor Alam were again elected as the president and the general secretary of the Council. Moulana Mufti Ashrafali Baqawi, Moulana Asrarul Haque Qasimi, Dr Yasir Ali Usmani, Moulana Aneesurrahman Qasimi and Moulvi Abdul Alim Qasimi were elected vice-presidents. Retired ACP Mouji Khan was elected treasurer and Moulana Abdul Wahab Qilji was elected assistant secretary general.

Discussions were held on the different problems faced by Indian Muslims. Fourteen resolutions were presented. Around 130 representatives from all states of the country participated in the convention.

This is the first time that the 18-year old organisation’s national convention is being held in Kerala. However, no prominent Muslim organisation from the state or any representative was reportedly present at the convention. The erstwhile NDF (whose leaders now lead the PFI) had been in the forefront to organize a meeting of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (at the same venue as the present Milli Council convention) in Manjeri in 2004. But the meeting had to be cancelled reportedly because of the intervention of major muslim organizations in the state. The organizations seemingly refused to accept the NDF as one among them through the organizations of the AIMPLB meeting. (The NDF had a bad image in Kerala especially as it seemed to be advocating violent means.) The present convention of the Milli Council was held at the same venue planned for the AIMPLB meeting six years ago. Now, the NDF is no more but the PFI organized everything. Even though the organisation is said to be gaining support among the youth, Muslim organizations are still not ready to accept it especially after its members were found to be behind and arrested for the recent attack on the controversial professor in Ernakulam.
