Kuala Lumpur : A total of 884 medical officers have resigned between 2007 and September this year, Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai said.
He said there were various factors which led to the resignation of the medical officers, which included accepting other job offers, including as lecturers from private institutions of higher learning, following spouses abroad and for health reasons.
Liow said there were also cases of medical officers resigning and release from the service with permission, adding that this was normally given to those who wanted to serve with other government agencies, like universities and the
local authorities.
“From the 884 medical officers who resigned, 127 of them were released from the service with permission,” he said in response to a question from Senator Mustafa Kamal Mohd Yusoff at the Dewan Negara (Upper House) today.
Liow said that in 2007, 167 medical officers resigned and in 2008, 303 people.
“However, there was a drop in the number of medical officers who resigned last year, which was 217, and this year, 197 medical officers have resigned as of September,” he added.
