Attorney General Arturo Chavez Chavez told reporters that the administration of President Felipe Calderon has re-asserted the authority of the government, promoted the professionalisation of Mexico’s plethora of federal, state and local police forces and worked to repair the social fabric to prevent crime.

Yet the state still “needs to transform its institutions to be equal to the necessities of society”, Chavez said.

Authorities have confiscated illegal drugs with an estimated street value of $11.17 billion in the first four years of Calderon’s 2006-12 mandate, the attorney general said, while 10 of the 24 reputed kingpins on the government’s most-wanted list have been captured or killed.
