“If the villagers living in the region are not in the favour of a project, I don’t see any point in imposing on them,” Thackeray told reporters after the meeting.

The activists said the project will harm the environment and activities like agriculture, fisheries and horticulture.

Shiv Sena legislator Subhash Desai said: “The activists also complained about the increasing atrocities from government and police. Yesterday (Saturday), one activist lost his life as he was badly beaten up by the police. This lead to the villagers burning the police vehicle.”

Referring to a report by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Thackeray said the government had not taken appropriate steps to educate the locals and certain environmental norms had been flouted.

Uddhav Thackeray promised the delegation that he will survey the area, Desai said.

Shiv Sena had earlier this month declared its support to the local farmers opposing the 9,900 MW nuclear power project proposed in the biodiversity rich Konkan belt.
