New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Monday issued notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner for not following the court’s earlier direction to demolish some hutments in Sultanpuri area of north-west Delhi.
A division bench of Justice Vikramjit Sen and Justice Manmohan Singh issued notice to the MCD commissioner asking why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for violating the orders.
The court asked the MCD chief to reply by March 15.
The court’s notice came as despite the MCD’s earlier assurance that the shanties would be demolished in August last year, no action has been taken.
The bench expressed surprise when MCD counsel Monday pleaded for two more years to relocate the people living in the shanties before their dwellings can be demolished.
MCD counsel stated that the civic agency was not demolishing the huts as the lt.governor has “strictly directed us to conduct a re-survey and prepare a chart about the sources of income of people living in jhuggis”.
“Keeping in view the winters, no demolition work should be carried out till March 15,” the MCD plea stated, adding that such action would lead to suffering of the 600-800 dwellers.
