Brussels : United Nations’ Under-Secretary-General Radhika Coomaraswamy received an honorary doctorate from Leuven University in Belgium
Tuesday in recognition for the work she has done to promote the rights of women and children.
Ms Coomaraswamy a former Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission in her country Sri Lanka is the UN’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict.
She was appointed by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan as Under-Secretary-General, Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict in April 2006 and reappointed by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in February 2007.
In this capacity, she serves as a moral voice and an advocate to build awareness and give prominence to the rights and protection of children affected by armed conflict.
