New Delhi : Books on morality and religion have caught the attention of quite a few people at the ongoing 19th World Book Fair here. And no, they are not from Indian publications but from a government-supported publishing house from Turkey.

The stall of RNK Publishing, Turkey, at Hall 7 of Pragati Maidan, where the event is being held, has a range of books unique to Turkey. They include the “Risali-i-Nur” (“From The Light”) series of poetry, an ancient text by Bediuzzaman Said Nursi.

“This is the first time Turkey is showcasing books and its literature here. We are very happy with the response we have got. We didn’t think too many people would come, but there is a growing interest from the general public. The books we have are on morality and religion. They are only on display and not for sale,” Tahir Kumru, an official at the stall told IANS.

Books like religious guides for youth and women as well as translations of “Risali-i-Nur” in Urdu, Hindi, Russian and Farsi are available at the Turkey stall.

“These are very hard to find here in India and are unique to Turkish literature. We want to promote it here,” Kumru said.

However, there were also many people who stopped by the stall but were more interested in tourism material.

“I have heard Turkey is a beautiful country, but they (the stall) don’t have any books on the culture, tourism of Turkey. I would have preferred that,” said Khalid, a visitor to the stall.

Kumru said that the next time (when the fair will be held two years later), they would stock those books as well.

RNK Publishing doesn’t have an Indian office but the official at the stall said that with “growing interest in our small country, we will soon open an office in Delhi”.

A total of 1,200 Indian and foreign publishers are participating in the biennial fair this time. Country-wise, there are 15 countries which have participated in the fair that culminates Feb 7.
