New Delhi: Congress leader Digvijay Singh’s visit to Sanjarpur in Azamgarh today, first from a Congress leader since the Batla House encounter, could not enthuse the locals much as the air was heavy with latest picking of a local youth who was an accused in the Batla shoot-out case.

According to Tarique Shafeeq, a civil rights activist in Sanjarpur, the villagers neither protested his visit nor thronged out to welcome him. After meeting some parents of Batla House and Delhi serial blast accused, Digvijay Singh made a public speech wherein he said he was of the view that National Investigation Agency should probe the Batla incident. In his 10-minute speech he did not term the Batla as a fake encounter.

Earlier he met family members of Saif, who was captured from the Batla House flat, and some other accused. Singh did not visit the home of Atif Ameen. According to Shafeeq, Singh called parents of Mufti Abul Bashar in Sarai Meer to come to Sanjarpur to meet him. They said they had no interest in the meeting with him.

As soon as the convoy of Digvijay Singh entered the border of Azamgarh he was greeted with black flags and slogans like these: Digvijay Singh Wapas Jao, Abul Bashar ka kya Qusoor, SIMI per pabandi hatao. On his entire rout were hanging black flags. Rashtriya Ulema Council, People’s Union for Civil Liberties and National Loktantrik Party had given a call to boycott his visit.
