Islamabad: Expressing concern over the US court judgment convicting a Pakistani female scientist for attempting to kill an American soldier, Pakistan said Thursday it will provide all assistance in her legal process.
President Asif Ali Zardari asked the concerned ministries of his government to immediately establish contact with the family of Aafia Siddiqui and provide her with possible legal assistance in the US.
The direction was issued after a Manhattan court found the US-trained neuroscientist guilty of attempting to murder a US soldier in Afghanistan, spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar said.
He said the president expressed hope that justice will ultimately be done as the case passes through subsequent stages in the US judicial system, the APP reported.
Siddiqui’s lawyers have already said that a review appeal would be filed after going through the details of the judgment.
She was convicted for trying to kill an American soldier while in detention in a police station in Ghazni, Afghanistan. The jury, however, said that she did not commit the crime with pre-meditation.
She was arrested in July 2008 on suspicion of having links with Al Qaeda and carrying chemicals and notes referring to terror attacks in the US.
