Broader discussion needed on creation of new states

By IANS,

Bhopal : The demand for creating new smaller states might weaken India’s federal structure, and the issue should be discussed with all political parties. This view emerged during a two-day conference of legislative speakers here.

Sixteen presiding officers of legislatures participated in the discussion on ‘Creation of Smaller States – A National Perspective’.

“The participants were unanimous in their view that nothing is more sacrosanct than the unity and integrity of the country. A common refrain amongst the participants was that the clamour for creation of more and more states might tend to weaken the very edifice of the federal structure of our country,” an official statement said Friday.

“In keeping with the present scenario, the broad view, which emerged, was that the matter needs to be discussed threadbare at the national level with the active involvement of all the political parties,” it added.

The 74th conference of the presiding officers of legislative bodies was held in the Madhya Pradesh assembly. It was inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Wednesday.

As many as 37 presiding officers attended the two-day conference.

They were united in the view that disorderly scenes and disruption of house proceedings by members were the two main reasons that led to important legislations and the budget being passed without proper discussion.
