New Delhi : Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Tuesday said she would consider suggestions by Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza that there should be a Women’s Parliamentary Caucus in South Asia.
“I will look into it,” Meira Kumar said on the sidelines of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) when asked about the suggestion made by her Pakistani counterpart.
Talking to reporters, Mirza said a women’s parliamentary caucus, which already exists in Pakistan, is an innovative step towards attaining strong and sustained representation and a voice to the vital issues of women in society.
In Pakistan, this forum cuts across party lines, regional differences and sects, she said.
Mirza said she had also taken up the regional caucus idea with Meira Kumar in her congratulatory message after her election as Lok Sabha speaker.
When the two met, Meira Kumar said: “I am excited that you have come.”
