The formation of a multi-party high level mechanism was decided at the meeting attended by Maoist chief Prachanda, NC supremo GP Koirala and UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal late last night, PTI reported here today.

The political mechanism will focus on drafting and promulgation of country’s new constitution in time, and take the ongoing peace process to its logical conclusion. Top leaders of all the major parties would be represented in the body, according to influential NC leader Krishna Sitaula.

After the meeting of the three leaders, the NC chief Koirala met Prime Minister adhav Kumar Nepal, who assured of the government’s cooperation with the mechanism and providing with all support.

The idea of multi-party mechanism was mooted after Nepal was elected the premier in May, but the political deadlock delayed its formation. The mechanism would include top leaders including Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala and Maoist chief Prachanda.

Another meeting of top leaders is scheduled to take place tomorrow at the residence of Koirala at Maharajgunj where the formal announcement of the mechanism would be made, Sitaula told PTI.

The three parties during the meeting also formed a task force comprising two members from each of the parties to finalise the terms of reference after agreeing in principle to form the the mechanism to steer the ongoing peace process.

Maoist chief Prachanda has also agreed to be part of the mechanism, said Sitaula, who had played key role as a negotiator while mainstreaming the Maoists in the past.
