New Delhi : The Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, arrived in New Delhi Sunday night on a three-day state visit to India.
Hasina, is accompanied by a business delegation of over 40 people.
During her visit she will hold talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other Indian leaders.
Signaling the beginning of a new chapter in their historic ties, India and Bangladesh will sign five agreements today including three anti terror and security related agreements.
The agreements will be signed after the talks between Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina.
India’s business chambers – Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Assocham – would be hosting a luncheon meeting for Hasina and flag issues for enhancing economic cooperation.
A 500 million dollar line of credit for infrastructure development in Bangladesh is also expected to be announced.
Trade between India and Bangladesh stood at over USD 2 billion in April-December 2008-09.
Hasina will also be conferred the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development on Tuesday.
An international jury, chaired by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, chose Hasina for her “outstanding contribution to the promotion of democracy and pluralism,” the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust said, announcing her as the 2009 recipient of the prize.
Introduced in 1986, the award in past years has been given to, among others, Kofi Annan, Bill Gates, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mohammad ElBaradei, Dr Muhammad Younus, Wangari Maathai and Hamid Karzai.
