New Delhi: Alarmed by the growing incidence of misuse of uniforms of security personnel by criminals, Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal Monday said it would soon become mandatory for shopkeepers to verify and maintain record of buyers.
“We would soon be issuing notice under the relevant section of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to make it mandatory for shopkeepers to verify and maintain records of people buying uniforms of police, paramilitary forces and armed forces,” Dadwal told reporters.
The move comes in the backdrop of rising incidents of criminals using police uniforms to commit crime.
A Class 6 student of G.D. Goenka School was kidnapped last week by a man posing as a traffic policeman. The 11-year-old boy was released only after his parents gave a ransom of Rs. 1.5 crore.
“Anyone can sell these uniforms. There is no restriction. We also provide uniforms to our men but they can also buy it from outside,” Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said.
