Panchkula (Haryana): The Haryana police said Sunday they were yet to arrest Ranjit Bajaj, the son of a former bureaucrat couple in Punjab, against whom a charge of attempted murder was filed Saturday evening.
“So far we have not arrested Ranjit Bajaj. We are still investigating the matter,” district police chief Maneesh Chaudhary said.
Bajaj, the son of retired bureaucrats B.R. Bajaj and Rupan Deol Bajaj, was booked following a complaint from Gurmohan Singh Bedi, son of a sitting Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge M.M.S. Bedi.
According to the police, Gurmohan, in his complaint, alleged that Ranjit along with two private security guards hit him with weapons at the North Park resort here over a parking argument at the winter ball of St John’s Old Boys Association (SJOBA), late Friday night.
He alleged that Bajaj threatened to kill him after a verbal duel.
Retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Rupan Deol Bajaj, who is now an information commissioner in Punjab, said her son was innocent.
“Ranjit is innocent and he has not hit anybody. It was just a verbal spat after a group of boys passed lewd remarks against Ranjit’s female friends,” Bajaj told IANS Sunday.
Two girls who were accompanying Ranjit at the time of the incident also filed a written complaint of misbehaviour with police.
“The two girls had submitted a written complaint yesterday (Saturday) and said that Gurmohan and his friends had misbehaved with them. But we could not pursue our investigation as the girls did not come to us again,” said Jangsher Singh, the investigating officer of the case.
