Debalina, secretary of Matangini Mahalia Samity, a women’s organisation working in tribal and underdeveloped areas of Nandigram and Lalgarh, was dubbed a Maoist leader by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

CID Deputy Inspector General Anuj Sharma Wednesday said his men recovered a letter from a Maoist courier, Rajesh Mandal, that was written by a Debu, who turned out to be Debalina.

Debalina Thursday vowed to take legal action against the CID for fabricating the charges against her. On Friday, she went on hunger strike and vowed to keep fasting until she was given a clean chit.

The CID has booked Debalina under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for her alleged links with Maoist leaders.

Additional Director General of CID Raj Kanojia said: “We will arrest her soon.”

A Kolkata professor, Nisha Biswas, was arrested for alleged Maoist links June 15 along with five intellectuals and seven villagers near Pirakata in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district.

They were said to have attended a Maoist kangaroo Court and spent two days with the Maoists in a tribal village.
