A statment issued here Friday by the European Commisison said ” fatalities still occur in the region, and armed groups have recently vowed to spread more violence, hampering so the work of humanitarian aid organizations in these areas. ”

” The funds will benefit over 100,000 people covering the protection of conflict-related detainees and civilians as well as health and psychological support to the most vulnerable people, in particular women, children and disabled persons, ” added the EU’s executive body .

The EU also announced the allocation of 1.5 million euro to provide relief to Bhutanese refugees scattered across seven refugee camps in the eastern districts of Nepal.

The influx of Bhutanese refugees to Nepal began in the early 1990s following a change in the Government of Bhutan’s citizenship policy, it noted in a statement.

Discussions between the Bhutanese and Nepalese Governments on the refugee issue have not yet led to a durable solution. The Nepalese government does not allow the refugees to engage in economic activities in the camps’ surrounding areas, it said.

The refugees, therefore, have no other option but to remain in the camps, in need of further care and assistance.

While 31,000 refugees have been resettled on a voluntary base in third countries, 81,000 refugees remain in Nepalese camps, and providing adequate assistance to the victims of this forgotten crisis has become increasingly difficult due to donor fatigue.

The main priorities of this aid are distributing basic food items to the refugees and addressing growing concerns for the nutritional status of these people, targeting the most vulnerable refugees; malnourished children, elderly, pregnant woman, concluded the EU statement.
