Kochi: Care should be taken to ensure there is no activity in the religious or educational institutions of Muslims or Christians hurting the good communal relations between the communities, urged a meeting of the leaders of Muslim and Christian communities. The meeting was held in Muvattupuzha in the background of the attack on the professor accused in blasphemy case.

The act of the professor – including questions insulting religious sentiments in the question paper for the Malayalam internal exam of B Com students in the Newman College, Thodupuzha – was indeed a big crime. However, responsible persons have apologised on the matter and action was taken on the professor. The police also took necessary legal action. Attacking the professor and family in such a situation is condemnable, the meeting observed. The rumour that the management too had a role in forming the question paper is not right. Those who break the rule of law should be brought before justice as soon as possible. All Keralites should come up against the forces that destroy communal harmony and communal harmony should be protected at any cost, the meeting opined.

The meeting suggested that official committees for communal harmony should be formed in the panchayat, municipal, taluka, district and state levels. Free and fair investigation should be carried out in the incident. Innocents should not be hunted and a whole community should not be portrayed as terrorists in the name of this. The meeting also warned against the divisive forces that exploit the odd incidents making an air that communities are far apart.

PT Thomas (MP) presided over the meeting. Representatives of different Muslim organizations and priests from various Christian churches attended the meeting. Prof Dr TM Joseph, principal of the Newman College in Thodupuzha where the question paper controversy occurred, also was present.
