Berlin : A protest against an openly anti-Islamic and xenophobic political group in Berlin turned violent on Saturday, according to news reports.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at the town hall of Berlin’s Schoeneberg
district to protest against a nationwide congress of the far-right populist movement Pro Deutschland movement which plans to run in next year’s Berlin
state elections.
Clashes between baton-wielding riot police and protesters resulted in several injuries.
Police used also pepper spray to disperse demonstrators.
At least one person was reportedly arrested during a sit-in blockade aimed at delaying the start of the Pro Deutschland congress.
Pro Deutschland is linked to the Cologne-based Pro Koeln group which has made negative headlines for its tirades against Muslims and foreigners in Germany.
