Thiruvananthapuram: No complaints have been received about the functioning of the ‘Taliban courts’ in the state, said Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in the Assembly. Some committees are functioning under the leadership of religious scholars to solve the disputes related to family, wealth, other personal problems etc among the believers. He was responding to a submission by Congress leader Aryadan Muhammed.
Kodiyeri said that a system called the ‘Darul Qada’ was inaugurated by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board secretary Moulana Wali Rahmani on July 1, 2009 at the Malappuram Municipal Town Hall. Investigation would be carried out to know whether the Darul Qada is functioning as a Taliban court or if it was taking illegal decisions. The state will never let a system modeling Taliban instead of the justice system, he added.
He said that the Popular Front of India itself claimed that it had 20 sister organizations. The Imams Council is one such organisation and it gives leadership to the Darul Qada.
Congress leader Aryadan Muhammed had quoted media reports that 14 ‘Taliban courts’ were functioning in the state and that they had decided 15 cases. He added that the courts were following strict Shariat laws. But the Minister refuted all such allegations reportedly based on police reports on the matter.
The Minister also rejected the media reports that the PFI had convened a secret meeting in Thakkala in Tamil Nadu on July 18. He said that what took place in the Rasheeda Hotel was a book release organized by the Darul Islam Foundation. The Tamil version of the book ‘Who Killed Karkare’ written by former Maharashtra IG SM Mushrif was released there. The Minister added that there was no information about any other topics having been discussed there.
There was widespread propaganda following the attack on the professor that the attack was carried out as per the order of some ‘Taliban court’ functioning in the state. Certain media took up the issue and also published many reports about the courts modeled on the ‘Taliban’. The statement of the Home Minister in the Assembly has proved the truth behind the ‘news stories’.
