Berlin : The German daily Die Tageszeitung (taz) on Wednesday highlighted Israel’s systematic instrumentalization of the Nazi-era Holocaust for its own political goals.
“Israel’s right-wing government is instrumentalizing the Holocaust for its policy. No Israeli government has ever misused the Holocaust as much as the present one to justify its policies,” the paper said in an editorial.
It added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been using the Holocaust to justify any Israeli aggression as “an act of self-defense.”
The daily pointed to the sytematic instrumentalization of the Holocaust by Israeli governments dating back to the 1967 war when the Jewish state used popular fears of a likely new Holocaust for a military attack on Egypt.
In the early 1980s, then-Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin compared the siege of the headquarters of late PLO chief Yassir Arafat in Beirut with the underground bunkers of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.
The latest report comes in the wake of comments by a prominent German anti-Zionist activist who also lambasted Germany’s Jewish leadership for instrumentalizing the Nazi Holocaust to serve the political objectives of the Zionist regime.
Evelyn Hecht-Galinski wrote in a recent column for the website Das Palaestina Portal that German Jewish leaders were misusing the Holocaust to muzzle any criticism of Israel.
The daughter of the late German Jewish leader Heinz Galinski warned of a “dangerous instrumentalization of the Holocaust by Israel and the Central
Council (of Jews).”
She referred to recent statements by the Berlin-based Secretary General of the Central Council of Jews Stephan Kramer who openly admitted Israel was misusing the Holocaust for its own political goals.
Kramer acknowledged that the Zionist regime and segments of the Israeli society were in fact instrumentalizing the Holocaust for their own political objectives.
