Berlin : German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle here Thursday reiterated the need for a transparent and independent investigation of Israel’s attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla which killed and injured dozens of peace activists aboard the aid ships.
Speaking after a meeting with his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski in Berlin, Westerwelle said such an impartial inquiry would also be in the interest of Israel.
He also urged the Jewish state to allow full access for aid to Gaza.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has earlier this week called for an end to Israel’s siege of Gaza in the wake of the Jewish state’s lethal attack against the Gaza peace flotilla.
Merkel was quoted saying the blockade of Gaza was “not okay because of humanitarian reasons.”
The German leader reiterated her “deep concern” over a possible escalation of the Gaza crisis.
A staunch ally of Israel, Germany usually avoids any direct criticism of the Zionist regime.
Berlin has also openly supported Israel’s wars in Gaza in 2008/9 and Lebanon in 2006.
