New Delhi: The Zakat Foundation of India has strongly reacted against the Rajasthan Government order whereby “an honest police superintendent has been called back to police headquarters for protecting Muslims from the rioters” in Balesar village of Jodhpur district. ZFI has sought intervention of Prime Minister and Home Minister.
On May 22, some anti-social elements of the Mali community (to which CM Ashok Gahlot) had demolished the 100-year-old Idgah and burned several shops and houses belonging to the Muslim community. To control the Mali community mob on rampage, Jodhpur SP (Rural) Sharat Kavi Raj in consultation with SDP present on the scene had ordered police firing in which a rioter was killed. The mob was pelting stone on the police team also. Defending his order the SP had said if he had not done so, the riots could have spread not only in Jodhpur but entire Rajasthan. The mob was marching towards the Muslim locality.
“The police officer performing his duty not only saved Muslims but the entire state from plunging into communal riot but the state government has as a reward asked the SP to report to Headquarters and he has not been given any post,” said Dr Syed Zafar Mahmood, President, ZFI and added such decision will only encourage the rioters.
Dr Mahmood has sought intervention of PM, Home Minister and Congress President Sonia Gandhi in this case. He also demanded the state government to reconstruct the Idgah without any delay and arrest the culprits.
