Malappuram: The boundless football craze of the people of Malappuram is dangerous, said Abdul Jaleel Saqafi, vice-president of the Sunni Students’ Federation. He was speaking at the programme titled ‘When the football craze of Malappuram people go unlimited’ in Malappuram.
He said that Islam does not blindly oppose games and entertainment, but rather the instruction is not to cross the limits. The British, the Portuguese and other western countries came to India in the guise of traders and robed everything from here. Mampuram Thangal and Ali Musliyar were great patriots who led wars against them and it is saddening to see that their descendants are holding the flags of these western countries to their hearts. The people of Malappuram should realize the hidden agenda of those who drag them to these, added the leader of the student organisation of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyathul Ulema (AP faction).
The unlimited football craze of the Malappuram district has forced some socio-religious leaders and organizations to strongly crticise the way the people celebrate the game. Some of the elder people feel this football craze as disgusting. They say they lost interest in the game on seeing the over-enthusiasm of the youngsters.
In several parts of the district, huge screens are set up by sports clubs and other groups on the sides of roads and vacant halls. Fans come to watch football matches wearing the jersey and holding the flag of their favourite teams. Sweets and fire-crackers added spice to the celebration of the fans on the victory of their favourite teams. Some buses even stopped in front of the clubs and asked for the latest score. The football fans who go out in the evenings come back only late at night after all matches of the day are over. Young people have, for the time being, bid farewell to politics and groups and are enjoying their favourite game.
