Sensex down, markets lacklustre

New Delhi : A benchmark index for Indian equities Friday was ruling 49 points lower from its previous close in lacklustre trade.

Trading in broader markets was also insipid.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,705.11 points, was ruling at 17,680.89 points, 49.35 points or 0.28 percent down from its previous close at 17,730.24 points.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty was ruling at 5,299.4 points, down 0.43 percent from its previous close at 5,323.15 points.

Broader markets indices too were dull, though some buying were seen in small companies. The BSE midcap index was ruling 0.11 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index 0.38 percent up.

The market breadth was tilted towards the positive, with 1,493 scrips on the advance, compared to 1,232 stocks declining, and 94 remaining unchanged.

Banking and IT scrips were under selling pressure, while consumer durables stocks saw some buying.

Asian markets were in a slump following a fall in the Wall Street overnight.

The Japanese Nikkei ended 1.92 percent lower at 9,737.48 points, while the South Korean Kospi closed at 1,729.84 points, 0.58 percent down.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was trading 0.61 percent down at 20,607.78 points. The Chinese Shanghai composite index too was in the red at 2,552.82 points, down 0.54 percent.
