Cabinet okays modification of police modernisation scheme

New Delhi : The union cabinet Thursday approved a proposal for the modification and extension of police modernisation schemes for all union territories, including Delhi.

The , initiated by the ministry of home affairs, started in 2006 with a provision of Rs.884 crore for five years from 2006-07 to 2010-11.

“This has been extended for two more years — that is upto 2012-13 — to give sufficient time to union territories to utilise the entire amount allocated under the scheme. In addition, the scheme has been improvised by making it more flexible,” said an official statement.

Till Feb 26, 2010, a total of Rs.413.09 crore has been released under the scheme. It is estimated that another Rs.176.8 crore is likely to be made available during the financial year 2010-11.

“An amount of Rs.281.65 crore is likely to be made available at the end of 2010-11 which will be pooled and distributed to the union territories on pro-rata basis during 2011-12 and 2012-13 to help UTs utilise this fund efficiently and effectively,” the statement added.
