Chandigarh: Punjab’s transport department will begin an online facility to give registration certificates (RCs) and driving licences to people from July 1, officials said here Thursday.
Principal Secretary Transport D.S. Jaspal said Punjab would be the first state in the country to go online for issuing RCs and driving licences.
“Equipment worth over Rs.2.20 crore (Rs.22 million) has already been delivered in the offices of the district transport officers for computerization of the district offices,” Jaspal said.
The transport department will use the software ‘Vahan’ (vehicle) for registration certificates and maintenance of record of vehicles and ‘Saarthi’ (driver) software for maintenance of records of driving licence holders.
Jaspal said issuance of driving licences and maintenance of record of vehicles constituted 70 percent of the work of district transport offices.
