“Trains are running as per schedule since early Wednesday,” said a railway official.

Mumbai’s electric trains carry nearly seven million people every day. Their drivers, or motormen as they are known, launched the protest Monday, seriously hitting movement of people from and to the city.

The work stoppage was called off Tuesday evening after talks with the Maharashtra government which promised to take up the drivers’ demands with the central Railway Board.

The drivers were demanding higher wages, including overtime allowances, and safety on the tracks.
