New Delhi: Sita and Geeta, the conjoined twins who were separated after a 14-hour surgery last month, are ready to be discharged from hospital next week, doctors attending on them said Wednesday.

A team of 27 doctors in a Delhi hospital had April 5 separated the 18-month-old Siamese twins who hail from Bihar. They were born with congenital abnormalities of being joined at the waist, hip and legs and had a common genito-urinary and intestinal system.

“The genito-urinary tracts and the intestines have healed well. It is noted that the twins are doing well on other parameters too,” Arvind Sabharwal, paediatric surgeon at Batra Hospital, told IANS.

He added that the girls have had remarkable recovery and that their weight had increased by two kilograms each.

Though the siblings have a slight curve at the end of their backbones, it is expected to become straight soon. The girls should be able to walk in 15 months, he said.

“This is a landmark surgery not only for Batra Hospital but also for Indian healthcare as a whole,” said Sanjeev Bagai, CEO of Batra Hospital and Medical Research Centre.

Siamese twins are extremely rare and very few reach the surgery stage. The long-term success of separation surgeries in many international centres is less than 50 percent.
