New Delhi: The Central Government has sanctioned more than Rs 8 crore for Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) to carry out advanced research in the field of Nanotechnology/Nano-sciences. The grant has been given by the Department of Information Technology, Government of India.
“JMI is probably the only university to have got such a big grant to carry out research. Recognizing the research work carried out by Department of Physics and Department of Applied Sciences in the field of Nanotechnology, the Department of Information Technology, Government of India, has sanctioned more than 8 Crores to JMI to carry out advanced research in the above field,” said JMI Media Coordinator.
Under this grant, two projects will be carried out by these two departments. Jamia Millia Islamia will not only be the first university to carry out research in “synthesizing Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes” but also the only organization/institution in the country to carry out research in this field, she added.
Also, Jamia will use Single Walled Nanotubes for device applications of sensors. This will be path breaking research in India.
The University has been doing cutting edge research in the areas of Nano-sciences/Nanotechnology and in recognition of that has already been awarded a project on Carbon Nanotubes by Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO).
The University also runs an M.Tech. in Nanotechnology. The first batch of students has got excellent placements in Research Institutions, Educational Institutions, and Industry.
Nanotechnology as a science explores new technologies for creating nanometer devices which can open numerous avenues in space research, forensic sciences, electronics, medicine, industry etc.
