Tehran : Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Sunday termed the nuclear agreement with Brazil and Turkey as “opportunity for understanding and dialogue”.
Iran will forward the nuclear agreement to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Monday. It calls for Iran to ship its low-enriched uranium to Turkey for storage until it receives medium-enriched fuel for its medical reactor.
“This agreement is an opportunity for understanding and dialogue (between Iran and world powers) and could serve as beginning of a new era in international developments,” Ahmadinejad told Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan by telephone.
The agreement was based on a plan put forward in October by the IAEA, to have Iran’s uranium enriched in Russia and processed into fuel in France.
Negotiations on the IAEA plan broke down when Tehran insisted on exchanging its uranium on Iranian soil for processed fuel. Brazil and Turkey brokered the new compromise in Tehran Monday.
Ahmadinejad insisted that all signatories of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and IAEA members should have the right to pursue peaceful nuclear technology, indicating that Iran would not stop its enrichment process.
News network Khabar quoted Erdogan as saying Turkey would make all efforts to attract international approval for the Tehran agreement.
Despite the proposed agreement, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council have prepared a resolution for renewed sanctions against Iran.
