Macao : Residents of Macao, a special administrative region of China, use on an average five plastic shopping bags every day even as 60 percent of people said it would be “inconvenient” if the government prohibits its use.
While 60 percent of people interviewed in Macao said having to decrease their use of plastic bags would be “inconvenient”, around 90 percent expressed their support to the government’s initiatives to cut the use of plastic bags.
Around 60 percent of people support a tax on plastic shopping bags, and 60 percent said they would pay charges for every bag, Xinhua reported, citing a survey published in the Macao Post Daily.
Over a quarter of respondents used three to five plastic bags a day, while over 70 percent used two plastic bags per day, said the survey conducted by the Macao Environment Protection Volunteer Association.
A total of 1,104 local residents of Macao took part in the survey.
However, 80 percent of people said they do not bring their own bags while shopping, while 76 percent said they recycled used plastics bags for other purposes.
