Democracy is the only way to curb the menace of terrorism

The present experience of Greece over mail bombs may be new but the method is not strange. Terror attacks has become a common phenomena in the aftermath of 9/11 mainly because of the polarised policy of the then bush government against the second largest community-Muslims in the world. No doubt, in recent years, the world has undergone devastation at Muslim hands as the construction in the past.

The root lies not in the perceived concept of extremist Islam but in the contemporary policies affecting the Muslim community at large designed to benefit democracy and safeguard the security of citizens. Laws like POTA or Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), even though, give ample power and freedom to security agencies interrogating the accused but are utilised least to benefit the nation. Indeed security agencies have shown increased instance of corruption after being powered with these anti-terror armour to that of their predecessors lacking the same. One of the several witnesses to this is the recent much hyped Batla House encounter in 2008 which ultimately proved to be fake. Not only this, even the recent upheaval in the Kashmir agreed to surrender only with the end to the AFSPA in the region. Even the Manipur is demanding the same.

Terrorism as explained by politicians is not the result of corrupted mind but of deprived life. British government had tagged LAL BAL PAL terrorist for their continued effort against the oppression let alone the Mahatma who is considered an icon by Barrack Obama, the president of the USA, the greatest champion of the “war on terror” flamed to achieve economic colonialism under cover, the effect of which is absolute.

With increasing instance of terror attacks in most parts of the world, our social structure either needs a transformation or our democratic foundation need be irrigated. We need to review the perceived concept of democracy existing in the present world. Democracy indeed has never taught the humankind to pluck off the rights of the citizens because of differences along the line of code of life. Indeed by definition democracy is best suited to multi-cultural, multi-religious nations where every soul wants to live along the line of either inherited principles or the adopted rule.

Focussing on policing to signing memorandum of understanding (MoU)’s to curb the regional terrorism with international co-operation government should instead pivot attention on legitimising right to live secularly. Not only this, economic stability should be prioritised to that of security thus entrapping a to-be-terrorist in the life trap.

The democratic government should stand at the top as moralist-educationist agency with authority to compel and at times punish the lawless thus creating a societal balance and setting example for the planning minds. The society can indeed be converged to form a self regulating peaceful agency if the fundamentals of pristine democracy are implemented in principle.
