Lucknow: An Uttar Pradesh government employee jumped to his death from the third floor of the secretariat annexe in the Hazratganj area here Tuesday, police said.
Anil Kumar, aged around 40 years, died on the spot.
According to Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Brij Lal, a secretariat staff member, who was present at the time of the incident, said in his statement that Kumar was “mentally disturbed”.
“The state government has announced a compensation of Rs.5 lakh for his (Kumar’s) family,” he added.
District Magistrate Anil Sagar told reporters: “An extensive enquiry is required to establish the reason behind the suicide…Whether it was some illness or financial problem, the exact reason would come out only by questioning the deceased’s family members or close relatives.”
Police inspector K.N. Mishra said that Kumar was a class-4 employee with the chief secretary’s office. “We are investigating why he committed suicide,” Mishra told reporters.
However, employees in the secretariat alleged that Kumar took the extreme step due to a delay in getting his monetary dues cleared from officials.
Kumar’s death triggered protests by the secretariat employees, who took to the streets and demanded a compensation of Rs.25 lakh for his family.
A widower, Kumar was a native of Ballia district. He is survived by two sons, police said.
The annexe houses many government departments, including the chief minister’s office.
