Srinagar: High Court in Indian Kashmir on Saturday quashed the detention of Bar Association president Mian Abdul Qayoom, who was arrested in June on charges of fueling unrest and anti-state sentiments in the Valley.
Justice Hakim Imtiyaz Hussain passed the orders quashing Qayoom’s detention after hearing arguments of state government and defense counsel over past four months. The judge ordered release of the Bar president if he was not required in any other case.
Qayoom was arrested and detained under Public Safety Act and was shifted to a jail in Jammu region soon after his arrest.
The court had yesterday reserved for orders a similar petition filed on behalf of General Secretary of the Association G N Shaheen, who is lodged at a Rajouri jail.
Lawyers in Srinagar had threatened agitation against the detention of High Court Bar Association chief Mian Qayoom under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for two years.
